SIG Announcements:

See your email later in the month to learn what’s happening this month at the Spectacular Linux SIG

Bud Gallager is planning to start a Windows 7 SIG, in May or June. Send him an email if you’re interested in the SIG or want more information. He’s Budgall@comcast.net. Day and time for the SIG are still open, probably the second Saturday of the month.

Paul Cooper reported that the Smarter Computing SIG is doing well. This month, he is  planning to show Windows Live. They’ll also be looking at how to fix up digital photos. The Smarter Computing SIG meets the second Tuesday at Hayward Adult School Music Room (in the same building as the Main Meeting).

Chuck acknowledged the outstanding service both Elsie and Tom Smith have given to PCC and presented each with a plaque. Harold Smith also received a plaque acknowledging the many ways in which he supports PCC.

Presentations:

Jan Fagerholm and Verne Perry showed LinuxMint 6. Verne pointed out the GRUB Linux boot manager, which has a variety of options, including memory checking. LinuxMint is based on Ubuntu. The menus have a logical hierarchical structure. Web browsing on Linux is faster than Windows, since anti-malware software is not needed. The major problem with most Linux distributions is that they do not work out of the box with many multimedia applications. Verne reported that LinuxMint worked well with many multimedia tasks, though he has added a few codec’s.

MintLinux takes advantage of the hundreds of free Linux applications. Hover over an MP3 and it plays. Jan demonstrated how easy it is to access digital photos and move them to the desktop.
