7:30 - 10 pm

The meeting was called to order at 7:39 pm by President Chuck Horner. He circulated a sign-up list for a Yahoo group so that members can stay informed about PCC developments and engage in discussion. He asked that people correct their name and email address.

Other Announcements:

Elsie Smith said that her request for suggestions for books from O’Reilly to use as door prizes resulted in several Windows 7 requests. Currently, O’Reilly only has pre-publication online texts; they sent a download certificate for Windows 7: The Definitive Guide and one for Windows 7: Up and Running.

This week, Bud Gallagher went to an AMD party, where he saw spectacular graphics, some coming and some already available.

There will be a cookout at the Clubhouse tomorrow.

SIG Announcements:

Del Parton let the group know that the hardware SIG meets tomorrow night. Bring your hardware.

At the next Specatcular Linux SIG, Jan Fagerholm will be showing off his new computer with several varieties of Linux. He described ExpressGate, which is up and running in 5 seconds. They’ll also be looking at the new KDE.

Bud Gallager announced that the Windows 7 SIG meets tomorrow at 1. He has applied to host a Windows 7 house party. By the end of the week he’ll know if he was accepted. On October 6 Microsoft will have a loadfest in San Francisco.

Dan Dolgin announced that the Windows Mobile SIG will be returning on Monday, September 21.

Presentations:

Joy Somerville likes his new Asus netbook. He got interested in photography in 1951. To create the slideshow he first scanned the slides he wanted to use. He has a professional Plustek slide scanner and demonstrated its use to the audience. He used the Plustek SilverFast software to edit the pictures, and then saved choosing a .jpg format. He then showed a PowerPoint slide show he created from 35 mm slides.

After the break, Jan Fagerholm showed us how to repair photos using  the GIMP, an open source application. Both the Linux and Windows versions have all the correction tools that PhotoShop has—missing only the service bureau support. He showed the Windows version available. Jan then demonstrated several techniques for improving digital photos. He distributed a handout describing the strategies he used so that people can review at home.

A tip from Chuck: Someone received an email with a PDF of 20 photos. How to separate the photos? Get the photo you want  as a single image on your screen (manipulating the View sizing, etc.) Capture it with PrintScreen, paste it into a PowerPoint slide as a JPG.
